Sports Varsity

Sports and Athletics is an integral part of the SDO Program of Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS. It aims to develop student-athletes who excel in the various athletic events and will represent the school in local, national, and international sports tournaments.

Like all other areas of formation, Sports and Athletics follow the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm as a way of developing students-athletes. Training in the various athletic and sports events is geared towards the development of the 7C’s–Christ-centeredness, Compassion, Character, Culture, Conscience, Competence, and  Community. Winning in tournaments and competitions is not the end-all-andbe- all of the program, but a result of student athletes being formed in the tradition of excellence, loving service, and magis for the greater glory of God.

Varsity Policies:

1) Before a formal training or tournament starts, athletes must first submit a Medical Clearance (complete with medical history, laboratory results, X-rays, ECG, CBC, urinalysis, etc.) from their family doctor declaring them “physically Fit” for any strenuous activities during practices and games.
2) Athletes with one (1) failure or more will be suspended from playing in the tournament. They will only get to return to the team after they have improved their grades in the next trimestral/semestral period upon assessment by and expressed permission from the Principal. Likewise, they will not be allowed
to practice with the team until their grades are improved and cleared.
3) Transferees on appeal (with no prior Conforme from the Principal) need to pass all subjects in the first trimester (for Grade School and Junior High School) or first semester (for Senior High School) before they can participate in any competition but may be allowed to join practices once during weekdays and Saturdays only.
4) Athletes with a failing mark in their conduct grades will be automatically suspended from the team, cannot attend any practice sessions, or play for the school until they improve their conduct grades in the next trimestral period (GS/JHS) or semester (SHS) upon assessment by and expressed permission from the Principal.
5) If Milo SBP/Passerelle basketball players fail academically, they cannot join practices but will be allowed to finish the tournament.
6) Policies and procedures in the Student Handbook will be strictly enforced in and out of the playing court/venue at all times.
7) Athletes cannot represent the name of the school or even wear the school name/uniform in tournaments not sanctioned or approved by the school administration.
8) Athletes cannot join in any non-sanctioned tournament/s or sports event/s without the consent or approval of the School and Coach/es; nor wear the School’s official uniform/jersey or other official school merchandises in nonschool sanctioned events. This will also include wearing of official uniform/ jersey in public places like malls, market, parties, etc.
9) Two (2) hours before an officially scheduled game, student-athletes will be allowed to go out of their class to prepare for the game.
10) Any injury incurred during practices, tune-up/exposure/ invitational games and tournaments will be covered by the school’s insurance provider for the school year. Additional coverage for athletes can be negotiated by the school on a case-to-case basis.
11) Coaches are authorized school representatives in forming and training the athletes. They are deputized by the school to implement school policies and
procedures as stated in the school’s student handbook. This may include the right to discipline/suspend/expel players in games and practices.
12) Coaches have the right to choose the final team roster/s or line- up/s of qualified athletes before the start of any tournament. They are also tasked to provide an official list of players and regular updates to the Principal, Associate Principal for Formation, Student Activity Program Coordinator, and Sports Coordinator. Respect and obedience must be shown to him/her by both athletes and parents/guardians as one would treat a teacher/administrator.
13) The school reserves the right to amend the provisions stated in the Athlete’s Agreement as it may deem necessary.

Note that the Student Development (Student Activity) Program is operated by four (4) full-time personnel, headed by the SAP/SDO Coordinator.
