The Art of Fantasy

The Art of Fantasy

Society today may very well be submerged in greedy and self-destructive endeavors, many of which have been prevalent throughout human history— political conflict, environmental lethargy, and the act of spreading violence to your fellow neighbors can almost be considered as human functions. All these acts of depravity makes us feel filthy with ourselves, making whatever purity we have within us feel like it is a weakness; yet, as humans have so graciously shown in the past, we can channel this purity into revolution through art. The existence of various forms of art has counteracted the ugliness of the adversities we have faced in the past. These art forms include visual arts, performing arts, and the thundering staff that is creative writing.

Creative writing, in essence, is rebellious; it is not bound by the restrictions of academic and journalistic writing. It allows one to create a whole new realm of their own, away from the reality people have to live in. Although it may seem foolish, the power to escape reality has quietly had a lasting effect on the course of human development. The hefty ability of imagination has brought about storytellers, poets, novelists, and screenwriters who have created literary crafts that stood against the test of time and are testaments of the impact creative writing can have on society as it moves forward. William Shakespeare, Jane Austen, and George Orwell are among the many historical colossuses of creative writing; respectively, they have shaped how we perceive romance and human sensibility, shed light on previously unspoken injustices on women, and formed political viewpoints as well as social practices that are followed to this very day. This proves that it is not delusional to write about present-day affairs in hopes of being able to cure the world of its self-inflicted wounds. With the pressing issues of the modern day, a portion of the youth aspire to become beacons of change through creative writing, as they know they are capable of becoming so.

On a calmer agenda, being able to write creatively can help one to live life more exhaustively, as should be done everyday. Whether it be the pleasure of charming one’s partner or the solace that poetry provides to those who think they are isolated in their woe, creative writing can be a leisure and a verbal duvet for today’s aching, overemotional youth. The pleasures creative writing brings is also obvious in the act of putting your child to sleep with a bedtime story or scrolling through social media and laughing as you encounter a poem you relate to or an excerpt from your favorite book and instantly feeling gratified after seeing such.

Though society can be dismissive of the beauty creative writing holds, this may lead to the blunt and insensitive way people deal with their issues today, unwittingly affecting the world as a whole. I believe that if one has a proper relationship with creative writing, it is then that one can see what lies beyond the world we live in everyday.
