BASIC education and college administrators of Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion of Roxas City visited the Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS High School grounds in the afternoon of August 9, 2015 as part of their benchmarking initiative in preparation for their Senior High School.
According to CPC Director of Academics Fr. Cyril Villareal, they chose Ateneo as one of the areas to visit “to learn from the effective systems that made the Jesuit school as a leader in Basic Education.” He further said that the trip is purposed to get some ideas from the school’s own preparation for the Senior High School.
20 deans, principals, and heads of offices were first given a bird’s eye view on the philosophy, history, spirituality, vision, and mission of the school by school president Fr. Joseph Haw of the Society of Jesus. Principal Rosario Dordas then discussed the Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS academic and non-academic formation programs. He was followed by assistant principal Dr. Herman Lagon, who talked about the SHS preparations of the institution.
The visitors were then toured around the campus by the different subject area coordinators of the department. They went to the school gym, Oratory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, formation and administrative offices, clinic, canteen, laboratories (science, computer, and home economics), faculty room, library, audio-visual rooms, classrooms, and school grounds among others.
To note, Ateneo de Iloilo-SMCS will be offering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) strands for its SHS. As of June and from the hundreds of schools in the city and province, it is one of the only 11 private schools in Iloilo that has earned the official permit to offer SHS next school year.
CPC, on the other hand, plans to offer all the Academic strands (STEM, ABM, General Academic Track, and HUMSS or Humanities and Social Sciences) plus Technical-Vocational, Arts and Design, and Sports tracks to service more than a thousand future Grades 11 and 12 students in Capiz.
Purisima, as it is also commonly called, prides itself with alumni such as the late Jaime Cardinal Sin, former Supreme Court Justice Josue Bellosilo, and now congressmen-lawyers Rodriguez and Fredenil Castro. It is the biggest Catholic school in Capiz and is run by the Archdiocese of Capiz.
CPC also went to University of San Agustin as part of their benchmarking enterprise. They went back to their home base in Archbishop Street, Roxas City after their afternoon stint in the Mandurriao-based Ateneo. (Herman Lagon/Magis)
